How to make all natural Easter egg dyes!!

I feel like when people use natural dye on their Easter eggs they get the most unique & beautiful colors!! This year I decided to finally try it myself. I also picked up one of the standard egg dying kits from Target that I will do with the kids. This egg dying project was just for me and I loved it!

I didn’t really have any formal instructions to follow and I made a few mistakes I’ll avoid next time! I hard boiled 5 eggs last night and let them cool in the fridge so they would be ready to go. Warner’s sticky little fingers were already checking out the eggs before I was ready to use them. Love all those little blue fingerprints 🙂

I started by just looking through my fridge for pretty colors to use as dye! I am someone that does not like wasting food and I hoard left overs. But, for some of the things in our fridge it was just time to go. I grabbed strawberries, kale, cranberries, grapes and tumeric powder! I know blueberries would have probably made beautiful eggs but we love blueberries around here too much to spare any. And why are blueberries so dang expensive.

So, I’ve mentioned before…I don’t really follow recipes…or instructions. I just go with it especially when I’m doing a new DIY project. I feel like that is half the fun…the anticipation to see if it even works! I boiled/simmered each item in 2 cups of water for about 20 minutes. My first mistake was not letting them simmer longer. I think my colors could have gotten waaaay darker if I let them simmer for an hour or longer. But I didn’t have that kind of time! Also, 2 cups of water was too much for my cute ice cream dishes that I used. If I would have used less water the colors would have been more vibrant too!

After I boiled all the things and let them cool a little…it was time to pour the liquid into the glass containers! You can use any little cups you want but I hardly ever use these pretty vintage cups so that’s what I picked. I’ve had them for years and I think I’ve only used them once!!! Do you guys have nice dishes that you’ve never used?? I’m pretty sure I got these at a yardsale so I don’t know that they would even be considered ‘nice’ lol. I love them though! I don’t want to live life having ‘special’ dishes saved for an occasion that never comes. I’ve really been working on taking my belongings down to a minimal level and only having stuff that I actually use. (What a concept)

You can add about a tablespoon of white vinegar into your containers. The little bottles of vinegar by the egg dying stuff at Target we’re like $4. I got this bottle at the dollar store! What does the vinegar do for egg dying? I really have no idea. Something about the calcium in the shell of the egg reacting with the acidity in the vinegar makes the eggs dye well. Plus, the smell brings me back to dying eggs when I was little so I’ll keep using it just for that!

Look at all those red tones! They are beautiful but I would have loved to see more of a variety of colors. The tumeric ended up being the richest surprise. That stuff is like paint! I tried a tumeric DIY mask before and I went a little to heavy on the tumeric. I had an orange tint for a few days. The cranberries also had a pretty good color. The others are really light and I’m not expecting them to show up very much…especially the kale! After I let these cool for a bit I popped an egg in a glass and then set them in the fridge. I let them sit over night hoping the color would get darker.

There are so many different things you can find in your kitchen to make natural dye! Basically anything that can be boiled and will bleed color into the water.

  • Onions(this one surprised me!)
  • Beets
  • Red Cabbage
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Chili powder
  • Spinach

Have you ever dyed eggs with natural ingredients? I’m definitely going to make this a new tradition! I also feel better about eating them after. You never know what’s lurking in those dye tablets from the store. Seriously. I’m looking forward to making a delicious egg salad later this week!

So, they for sure did not turn out as bright as I had hoped! Now I know what I need to do next time. Let the water simmer for longer and I think I’ll for sure use blueberries and beets! I still think they are beautiful and they will make a delicious egg salad!!

Diy Home Decor on a budget

I love a good deal. In fact, I rarely pay full price for anything. I love bargain stores and yes I even buy most of my clothes second hand. I’ll have to make another blog post about all of the adorable jeans I have found at Thrift stores!

One of the things on the very bottom of my spending list in this season of life is home decor. I have my entire dream house decorated and furnished just how I want it…ON Pinterest. But in real life no..not yet. Every now and then I will find something I can’t pass up and when it’s only $1 I don’t feel guilty about it 🙂 I found these adorable pots and faux cactus at the DOLLAR STORE guys. I knew the cactus was going to get a little makeover but I couldn’t believe how cute and well made these pots are! I only bought two but I was tempted to buy the entire shelf of them. (I really wish I would have!!) I wanted to keep the cactus looking natural to match the pots so I decided to paint the little plastic pot Oatmeal color. ( I even got my paint on sale!)

I am calling this a DIY VERY loosely considering all I did was slap a coat of paint on the cactus pot. I didn’t even do two layers because I wanted it to look kind of rustic. I mainly just wanted to share this to highlight that you can actually find great stuff at the Dollar Store! I’ve also learned that if you see something worth getting at a bargain/thrift store you should probably grab it! I’ve waited on things before and went back the next day and they were gone. That’s the thing with the discount stores…they are constantly getting new merchandise and usually don’t get the same stuff twice!

What about you? Do you like finding good deals or is home decor something you will splurge on? I had a gift card for TJ Maxx and I bought the most beautiful crochet dream catcher! I think it was like $48 which still seamed like a great price to me! It’s so large that I couldn’t even fit the whole thing in the photo!

Calling all the dreamers!

If you don’t already follow me over on Instagram I want to share what I posted on there the other day.

Last year I was getting ready to have my 3rd baby and was already dreading the first few months after. I had some major postpartum emotional seasons after having my first 2. I had already decided I did not want to get on medication. (Nothing against medicine! Just not for me) After all of my researching online for postpartum support I kept ending back at essential oils. I already knew essential oils worked…my Dr had given me a combo of peppermint/lavender to try to help my nausea during my first pregnancy. I decided it was worth a shot to try them again! I started researching which oils were the best for sleep and anxiety. Most of the postpartum issues I experienced were more anxious thoughts than depressed thoughts.

I grabbed a little diffuser, some lavender oil and a blend called ‘Happy’ at the grocery store. I’m not even sure what brand they were now but they were probably $3 a bottle. I wanted them to work SOOO bad. I diffused those oils and rubbed them on my wrists and nothing happened. I knew there had to be something I was missing because so many people LOVE oils. I kept researching and started to learn that all essential oils are not created equal!! Young Living kept popping up when I was searching for quality oils. I already followed Francesca Battistelli on IG and had been following her other account Honeycomb Essentials too. I decided to buy my kit from her even though it seemed way more expensive than the oils I had purchased at the store! I fell in love with the oils almost immediately. There is nothing like a pure essential oil… I tossed the ones from the store! Young Living is the only company that offers a Seed to Seal promise on their essential oils and a promise that they come straight from the farm to your house. They are not diluted and contain no chemicals. The FDA does not regulate essential oils so the ones you buy at the store can literally be diluted with chemicals and labeled “100% therapeutic grade’. It’s not that Young Living oils are just priced way more for no reason…you’re getting what you pay for! I’ve had people say they are just expensive because it’s an MLM. No. They are expensive because pure essential oils are expensive to make and worth paying for. What is more expensive then medical bills? I would rather invest in my preventative health. You do not want to be rubbing $3 bottle of lavender oil all over you and your children!

So back to using my Young Living essential oils. This was the best postpartum experience I’ve had so far. I was finally getting better sleep and I was loving all of the oils. One thing I didn’t expect postpartum was after several months how secluded I was going to feel. I love my 3 babies but I felt like from the moment I got up in the morning we were SO busy and then before I knew it the end of the day had come and I felt like I had accomplished very little. I know raising children is a huge accomplishment in itself but anyone who is a stay-at-home mom probably knows what I’m talking about. I wanted to have a connection with the outside world and most of the time it was just too hard to get us all out the door! I joined a moms group but it was at a really bad time on Monday mornings and made me late to pick up Ellie every time so I had to stop going. My husband works A LOT and by the time he gets home he’s tired and goes to bed pretty early. I was feeling so down with life just flying by and we were like hamsters in the wheel never getting ahead. I was praying and told God there HAS to be something more. Show me something..anything..what do I need to be doing??

The next day I woke up and had a notification that a mentorship was starting in Francesca’s Young Living group Honeycomb. I knew all of the girls in the group were so passionate about doing the business and I thought to myself…what if it really is as fun and awesome as they say?? I went for it. The mentorship blew me away. This company is so amazing and I really felt like I was led to this specific team for a reason. The community is one of the best parts. Everyone is so encouraging and I finally felt like I had found my tribe of people! Have you ever heard anyone say that? I have heard people talk about finding their ‘girl gang’ before and I didn’t get it. I never would have thought Young Living would be God’s answer to my prayers. I found friendships, community and a way for me to feel like I have a purpose besides making snacks and changing diapers. I love the products so much and I am never going to stop using them. It’s opened me to a whole new world of wellness and a desire to live a healthier life! I’ve been getting chemicals out of my house and replacing them with natural products that are safe for my kids to be around.

I know there are so many people out there that are feeling that deep desire of wanting to do better…live better. I encourage you to take a chance! Pray about it! We have the fastest growing team in Young Living because it is made up of amazing leaders. They have provided us with every resource we could ever need to be successful at this business. Young Living just celebrated 25 years this year and it is not going anywhere. Your kit comes with a wholesale membership that gets you 24% off of all of your future purchases. My personal team is growing every month and I am having so much fun! I have a special spot open on my team and I am looking for someone who is all in and ready to run with me!!

This is a picture of the income disclosure straight from Young Living. I have been experiencing this already and I’m running all the way for the top. Which means if you join our team you are headed that way too!! These numbers are real and the girls on our team are living this out. People are paying of debt, buying houses, quitting their jobs and their husbands are retiring early. The amazing thing is this isn’t just for a select few who got in early or have to climb over everyone else to get there. This is possible for us too. These numbers happen when we all link arms and go for it. I am so excited for where our team is headed this summer and we would LOVE for you to come with us. (These are MONTHLY by the way)
